Major issues with Bill 5

The Environment

We are concerned about the biodiversity and sustainability of our region. Bill 5 repeals Ontario’s Endangered Species Act and replaces it with a much weaker conservation law, resulting in diminished protections for threatened species. We are also concerned for the integrity of our provincial parks.

Indigenous
 Consent

Bill 5 undermines the rights of Indigenous Peoples, removing the requirement for meaningful consultation on Indigenous lands.  This contravenes treaty responsibilities and is seen by Indigenous people as a serious threat to their sovereignty, health and environment.

Municipal
 Self-Determination

Bill 5 reduces requirements for public consultation and oversight in land use planning decisions. The bill permits the creation of “Special Economic Zones” where environmental assessments, public health regulations and local laws can be suspended.

Labour Laws

“Special Economic Zones” could suspend or override existing labour protections. Within these areas, employers could potentially sidestep laws such as the Ontario Labour Relations Act, the Employment Standards Act, and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Agriculture

“Special Economic Zones” increase risks to farmland, allowing the provincial government to bypass local land use planning, environmental assessments, and other protections that safeguard agricultural lands. It also weakens environmental protections that help maintain soil, water quality, and species important for farming.

Youth

Many young people have protested Bill 5, arguing that it threatens their future by prioritizing short-term economic gains over environmental sustainability and community well-being.
